Have you heard of the latest scam – The Verizon impersonation?

In a recent scam, cybercriminals impersonated telecommunications provider, Verizon. While the real Verizon logo includes an asymmetrical ‘V’ hackers used symbols to imitate the logo.

Using the fake logo, cybercriminals sent a phishing email that was masked as a Verizon voicemail. The email directed viewers to click the ‘Play’ button to listen to the voicemail. Once the button was clicked, viewers landed on a replica Verizon landing page. Before even getting the chance to listen to the voicemail, they were directed to log in to their Microsoft Office 365 account for authentication. Unfortunately, once the credentials had been entered, the cybercriminals had been authorised full access to the individuals Microsoft Office 365 account.

Here are a few tips to keep you safe from this kind of phishing attack:

  • This is unfortunately not an uncommon form of cyber-attack. Cybercriminals can easily use this technique for other brands and can replicate logos, designs, URLs and more that seem very convincing. Make sure you are CERTAIN the link is from a trustworthy and legitimate address before you click.
  • Generally phishing attacks are pretty straight forward. The most common form of malicious attachment are .doc files, so be mindful when receiving documents via email. Logging into other accounts is VERY unusual. If you’re not sure if a document or file is legitimate, contact the company or your security team.
  • Instead of clicking directly on links in emails, head over to the company’s official website. Any offers or deals are likely to be broadcasted there and you can be sure you are not going to be lured into a hacker’s trap.
